Copyright Issues in Generative Music Systems: A tech perspective
Nadine Kroher
Image of Nadine Kroher

ABSTRACT: Creators across media sectors, including composers, photographers, designers, writers and film-makers, are increasingly worried and frustrated about their IP being used as training material for generative AI systems without their consent or any remuneration. While legal and ethical issues have been discussed at length, little is known around the technological ambitions, advancements and limitations related to this topic. Based on the example of music, we will explore recent related technological innovations, including AI-generated content detectors, watermarking algorithms, data-driven remuneration models and membership inference attacks.

BIO: Nadine is Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Passion Lab, a London based AI research lab and consultancy business. She holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics and has been working in the field of Machine Learning for over 10 years. Nadine has cross-sector and cross-discipline experience and her R&D expertise encompasses recommendation systems, machine listening, computer vision, media content understanding and generative AI. She holds several patents in the field and has co-authored numerous scientific publications.

The Model is the Artwork
Ruggero Marino Lazzaroni
Image of Ruggero Marino Lazzaroni

ABSTRACT: This talk challenges the notion of AI as merely a tool for generating content, proposing instead that model creation itself constitutes artistic practice. I explore how proprietary models and RLHF constrain creativity through regression to mediocrity, and demonstrate how artists can reclaim agency through custom model training. From fine-tuning open-source models to implementing reinforcement learning techniques, I illustrate pathways for artists to infuse their unique vision into AI systems. The presentation will feature methodologies and examples from both established practitioners and my own experimentation, revealing how technical processes become expressive artistic acts in themselves.

BIO: Ruggero Marino Lazzaroni is a PhD researcher at Graz University focusing on using large language models to enable social science simulations, with a particular interest in applying LLMs to analyze disinformation dynamics and collective behavior. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy, International and Economic Studies from Ca' Foscari University and a Master's degree in Social Data Science from RWTH Aachen, where he researched chain-of-thought approaches for LLM-based social simulations for his Master thesis. His research combines LLM fine-tuning and agent-based modeling, while also maintaining several industry collaborations as an AI consultant, developing custom RAG systems and knowledge graph solutions. Outside academia, he contributes to data (and traditional) journalism projects at Scomodo magazine, applying machine learning methods to analyze political and social phenomena. His side projects include developing tools for polling data analysis, fine-tuning models for various purposes, and creating datasets for academic research.

Session Lead/Moderation
Birgit Bachler
Image of Birgit Bachler

Birgit Bachler is an Austrian artist, designer and researcher previously based in Rotterdam/NL and Wellington/The Whanganui-a-Tara/NZ recently settled again back home in Styria. Birgit has a background in interactive, audiovisual art, critical media design and hard- and software art. Curious how contemporary technology manipulates human and non-human connections she crafts experimental networks, often combining new and obsolete media with custom-built hardware and software. By dismantling and manipulating code and mechanisms of seemingly social technologies, she designs critical, sometimes playful contemplations of new media. In her most recent research she investigates Internet of Things and radio technologies as a means to give voice to the more-than-human world in networked environments.

Birgit has exhibited and presented at art institutions such as V2_ Institute for the Unstable Media (Rotterdam, NL), The Netherlands Media Art Institute (Amsterdam, NL), Museumsquartier (Vienna, AT) and media arts festivals such as Transmediale (Berlin, GER), xCoAx (Graz/online), ISEA (Istanbul, TR & Manizales, CO), Piksel Festival (Bergen, NO) and Sonic Acts Academy (Amsterdam, NL).

Ars Electronica: Animation Festival on Tour
Best-Of Prix Ars Electronica: New Animation Art (75 Min)
ars electronica visual

Like every year, Ars Electronica Animation Festival On Tour showcases recent artistic trends in the field of digital animation. The selection, compiled of the submissions at Prix Ars Electronica 2024 in its recently renewed category New Animation Art demonstrates the transformations and dynamics occurring within the field of animation. Even more strongly than previous years, one could observe the tendency of many creators to utilize specific tools (such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, DALL-E, Sora, Runway, or ChatGPT) in a self-reflexive manner enabling critical commentary on the socio-technical nature of these systems and their impact on our society. Moreover, we noticed that a remarkable one-third of the submissions were projects created using AI tools or centered around AI as a theme—the highest number to date.

This Prix Ars Electronica Best-Of program includes 8 animations, 6 of which were awarded prizes in this year’s competition. The two Golden Nica winners, one Award of Distinction and three Honorary Mentions provide an excellent snapshot of the current landscape of animation art. Most of these works use novel technologies to deliver compelling socio-political commentary and make incisive reflections on pressing issues of our time: climate emergency, data surveillance, the invisible human labor that goes into training AI systems, the erosion of image credibility, the commodification of transnational education, as well as the need for fresh visions of culture, nature, and space. Two additional works enrich the program of award-winning projects, one delving into the quantum realities of our multidimensional universe, and the other unfolding a poignant tale of friendship and transformation.

Science and Data Visualizations (15 Min)

Through animation, scientific concepts become more than just data—they become stories that resonate and inspire. Animation can turn complex scientific concepts into visually comprehensible narratives, making them accessible to a broad audience. From exploring the Milky Way’s center and the dynamics of stars orbiting a supermassive black hole to depicting DNA replication or the planet’s warming trends throughout time, the selected animations break down intricate scientific phenomena into coherent segments. Such graphical representations of data often unveil ‘hidden’ insights about our world, in other words, they make us aware of phenomena that develop either too slowly (climate change) or too fast (DNA replication) to be noticeable through direct experience or observation technology. Some of the selected animations take a factual, informative approach to make complex scientific concepts tangible and engaging, while others, like Golden Nica winner Smoke and Mirrors, weave scientific data into emotional narratives.

heARTmonitor: interactive project presentation
Erwin Hauser, maplab

heARTmonitor is a media-based research and design experiment at the interface of technology, music and human physiology. It investigates how music influences our heart rate - and whether these reactions synchronise across multiple listeners. Using a state-of-the-art heart rate bracelet with an optical sensor array that transmits data to a central computer via Bluetooth and ANT+, heart activity is recorded, analysed and visually interpreted in real time. The project pursues not only an analytical, but also a creative question: what visual forms of expression can be developed from physiological data - and what immersive experience is created when you relate your own heartbeat to the music and the group?

A project realised in partnership by maplab, Springfestival, Klanglicht and AVL Cultural Foundation.

Live AMA: Ask a producer anything
David Kulenkampff (DKAY)
Image of David Kulenkampff

David Kulenkampff aka DKAY is a music producer, manager and social media coach for artists - but also for individual and small businesses. As a creative mind, he has produced countless tracks, designed audio logos, written brand songs and remixed pop icons. He has travelled the world as a DJ for over a decade and has (almost) played through the music industry as an indie label manager and radio producer.

He began his journey in 1999 with his first vinyl release in England - and the world has changed a little since then. Technologically, in particular, nothing is the same as it used to be. And that happened very quickly.

From the financial crisis to MP3 piracy, the rise of social media and AI - looking back, these leaps are breathtaking. But how do we deal with these challenges today? And what do they mean for us as artists? Many feel overwhelmed. And rightly so. New technologies give us incredible new opportunities, but this also has consequences. The world is more complicated and complex than ever before. There is a lack of orientation and, above all, communication; we are both empowered and restricted at the same time.

"I want to counter the modern overload with the oldest human tool: communication. Honest, constructive and productive communication, with the aim of better recognising the world and ourselves. Although we have access to all of humanity's knowledge, we can hardly ever access the experiences of an individual. But it is precisely through direct exchange that awareness can arise. I often observe that young people naturally (can) use online exchange, but I rarely see anyone engaging with them directly and personally. It seems as if the gap between generations has never been wider, and in my view this is a huge disadvantage for everyone involved and prevents us from making progress. I therefore invite anyone who is interested to address their questions to me, exchange knowledge and experiences and perhaps grow a little bit from each other."

Drum and Bass fans have the special opportunity to experience two absolute legends of the genre in the Styrian capital.

DKAY has been one of Austria's most well-known drum and bass DJs and music producers since the late 1990s. His productions move effortlessly between Liquid-D&B and uncompromising dancefloor anthems – always with technical precision, musical sensitivity, and a distinctive signature. Releases on renowned labels such as Metalheadz, Soul:R, Hospital Records, and his own label, Brigand Music, underscore his versatility. He has significantly shaped the sound of the genre for over two decades and remains a fixture in the global Drum and Bass community.

Hailing from São Paulo, Brazil, ALIBI has established himself as a leading figure in the global Drum and Bass scene. His musical journey began in the mid-90s, and his childhood and adolescence were enriched by a variety of genres, from Brazilian Samba to Rock, Reggae, Soul, and Funk. Today, he lives in Vienna and has established himself in the European music scene. He runs his own audio production and mixing/mastering studio, "1020 Mastering," where he has worked on projects for renowned artists such as DJ Marky, DJ Andy, L-Side, Anile, Makoto, Dillinja, DJ Krust, Freitera, and labels such as V Recordings, Innerground, Overview, Human Elements, and many others.

VOLAIN is a 24-year-old producer and artist from Austria, delivering raw and uncompromising soundscapes. As a member of the collectives Druck Nach Belieben and Dark Matter, he shapes the harder side of club culture with intense, high-energy sets. Following his release on Raving Panda Records, Volain keeps pushing his sound to the limits of hard electronic music.

The Graz-based collective Schallware, with MisSuki and Robbe, will provide two vinyl sets, as well as diverse and energetic sounds from DJs such as In.situ, Kylemind, Concise, BHB and Rowdie. MC Semlo will host the night on the microphone.
